Orchid Shoes

The most important piece of fashion you can own being a rider are by far shoes. Not because they look cool, or you have more pairs than your girlfriend, but how practical they are for riding. I have used various different shoes for riding over time, dozens of different skate shoes, the hailed Dunlop Volley and even sports shoes (back in my darker grommet years).

All of these shoes will do the job, but they never really excel. Volley’s grip well, but they are soft and wear out quickly and do not provide adequate stiffness in the sole for use on pedals. Skate shoes are great but the sole designs are never really practical to grip onto flat pedal pins and they also suffer from the soft sole syndrome. Finally sports shoes, well they are just sports shoes, enough said.

Enter the Orchid BMX range of shoes. The whole range of Orchid feature a quality hard rubber sole with a waffle pattern which is the best sole i have ever used on flat pedals. The soles are still soft enough to grip well, but hard enough to not be torn apart by pins so these shoes will last you a few seasons.

Orchid’s shoes are all tested and designed by their Pro BMX team so you know that these shoes have a good heritage. Their range also looks great; I am yet to find a shoe design which I am unhappy with. They are well worth the $179-$200 AUD price mark.

How about the fiveten shoes? Personally i reckon that they don’t look as great as skate shoes, but by looking at them they look like they would grip to any pedal out there. I guess it comes down to how much fahsion influences your riding!

The FiveTen (ex. Intense)are definitely are great riding shoe. But more suited to DH racing in my opinion, soft soles so they grip ALOT. When DJing or riding urban you want a grippy shoe but something you can take off the pedals if you want. The FiveTens are almost like being clipped in, but still great shoes for their purpose.

    Cheers,
