Funkoars - The Greatest hits

If you have ever been to a big Hip Hop gig, then chances are you have seen the Funkoars shredding up the stage in fine form. These guys have an absolute killer live set that really gets the crowd revved, I always look forward to a show when they are on the line up. I had only ever heard The Funkoars live, but the nice guys and girls at Obese sent me their new album titled The Greatest Hits .

I have been playing this album non stop for a couple of months now and I still haven’t tired of it. Now if your offended by bad language, tales of debauchery with easy women, nights on the booze and general riotous behavior…this isn’t for you. These guys are shameless, self dubbed Smut Hop, throwing around ruthless and offensive rhymes left, right and centre…I loved it!

The album is produced spectacularly, the sound is spot on with all the tracks having a good level of depth and originality in their sound. You will be jumping around to these tracks in no time, great music to get you psyched for a night out or a session at the jump park. As with most Obese releases, the family comes to play on a few tracks. The album features the Hilltop Hoods as well as the godfather; Pegz.

If the Hilltop Hoods are the kings of Aussie hip hop, then the Funkoars are set to overthrow the monarchy.

Go and grab yourself a copy at your local record shop or as always hit up Obese’s website. Another brilliant Aussie release, see you at their next gig!

Jase Connection

Obese Records’ have recently released JASE Connection, a compilation of Australian MCs doing their thing over the top of the renowned JASE’s beats. This is a great album; a snapshot of who is who in the Aussie Hip Hop scene at the moment. The artists are from all over Australia and from various record labels making this the definitive album to have, especially for people just getting into Aussie Hip Hop.

Jase started making beats back in 1994 and since then he has formed one third of the world famous electronic act Nubreed. Jase has honed his craft on well over 50 official releases and mixes it with the best of them in all styles. He has put over 200 of his own beats into this album with most of them being customised to suit every individual MC’s style. The tracks are great, each one has its own individual style emphasised by the different MCs. My personal favourites have to be Evolution feat. Equills and The Wash feat. Urthboy both have some really phat bass lines, smooth beats and some really tight rhymes thrown down by the MCs.

As for the MCs, there are just too many to mention and truly do justice to all of them and their different styles. So make sure you check out the attached PDFs to check them all out. This album really is a must have if you haven’t heard many Aussie MC’s, a great sample of the best going around.

Hilltop Hoods - The Hard Road

As you should all know Hilltop Hoods have recently released their latest album The Hard Road. This is their 4th album after being together for over a decade now. Their last album The Calling had phenomenal success especially with the hit Nosebleed Section. Since 2003 I have played that album to death and I am sure that I am not the only one who did so. The Hard Road has been an eagerly awaited album and it definitely hasn’t let anyone down; A true collection of Australian Hip Hop classics.

Pegz - Axis

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

If you haven’t heard about Pegz recently you must be living on another planet. Pegz has just released his new album “Axis” and it is a must have. Pegz (Previously MC Pegasus) is a Melbourne based MC, of Obese Records just around the corner from Windsor Dirt Jumps in Prahran.

I can’t find a song I don’t like on the album; all of them feature catchy back beats and clever breaks. Pegz has everything under control with smooth style, rhythm and switching in and out of tempos. The album also features some other big names of Australian hip hop such as Hilltop Hoods, Plutonic Labs and Hyjak n Torcha.

Any one out there who reckons Australian Hip Hop isn’t good should have a listen to this album. No Yankee rip off here, just Aussie hip hop at it’s finest, with Pegz’s own style consistent through out. It’s damn good to be able to listen to a good hip hop artist that is rapping about Aussie subjects, people and places.

Go and check out your local CD shop for a copy and the regular going rate, or head on over to www.obeserecords.com.
