Brisbane MTB Jam
A Complete roundup of the Jindalee Skatepark and Dirt Jam.
The Jam kicked off to riders slowly pouring in from all directions, still waking up from there night befores. Things really got going with nearly 40 Mountain bikes Hitting the Jindalee Skatepark pavement and the quality of riding was up there right from the word go. With smooth style being thrown around by all of the Racer boys and tech moves were starting to come out of the street and jump riders. Most riders took advantage of the perfect rolling hip by floating some big air and making some bikes very flat. More tech manouvers came via the way of big abubbucca’s, tail taps, foot plants, 3′0’s and Rail grinds. So far the day was turning out to be a corker.
The morning was restricted to the skatepark to allow the freshly cut and packed jumps to dry out, and after 8 hours of solid digging over the last two days they were looking prime. But once they were ready to roll every one got in there fair share of practice and settled in quickly thanks to the jumpy nature of the skatepark. A few tentative runs through the big line soon became a showdown with all the riders calling tricks and trying to one up each other, and this is all before the judging had even begun.
Those who were entering were rounded up and given the low down on how the competition was going to go down. A fast jam format was being used with unlimited runs being judged over 10 minutes with the best run being their final result. 2 prizes were to be given out, one to the trick of the day and the other to who ever produced the most style and stayed smooth over the difficult jumps. A few racer boys took part including Kram, 16 y.o. nationals shredder James Maltman and Timmy from ‘For the Riders’ the event sponsor. These guys were smooth as butta’ with Maltmans moto whips and cans and Timmys super flow. A big high five to Nutbag of the day Kram, who was not only jumping in clips but attempting no footers. But as you could imagine there was a tense moment when Kram didn’t quite pull a flattie back around and bit the dirt hard. A banged up knee and busted seat post later Kram was up and ready to roll again.
The top 3 riders were throwing down big and surprisingly all were under 18. The third place getter was a local school kid named Matt who scored massive style points when he boosted himself near 7 feet above the landing taking out the FTR t-shirt. The next 2 riders were split right down the line tied for first place in trick of the Day with 15y.o. style master Lee pulling a suicide to no hander lander then a no foot can to no foot X’up consecutively. The other winner was the event Co-organizer Josh who made every ones jaw drop pulling a Flip. Both were stoked with a new set of ‘Holy rollers’ Thanks to ‘For the Riders’.
The turn out was amazing and the only hitch of the day being a flat battery leading to a lack of tunes right before the main show. The street comp was put on hold until next time due to the riders being absolutely stuffed after the jump comp. Thanks to all the people who came out and watched and also the local BMX community for being so supportive. Hope to see a similar turnout to the Ferny Grove Jump jam on the 6th of august. Also Keep an eye out for a write up in the next Revolution magazine.
